How We Rate AI Tools

What the 1-to-10 score means, how Tool Showdowns work, and what to look for when you pick an AI tool.

The 1-to-10 score

Every AI assistant and tool on this site gets a score from real 1-to-10 ratings — no accounts required, no editorial thumb on the scale. Scores are blended with a Bayesian average, which means a tool with two perfect 10s doesn't outrank a tool with two hundred 9s. As more people rate, the score converges on the crowd's true verdict.

Tool Showdown

Two tools, side by side — pick the better one. Win percentage decides the Tool Showdown Top, a separate leaderboard from the 1-to-10 ratings board. A tool needs at least 5 showdowns to qualify, so early results settle down fast.

Owner's Take

The site operator has personally tried the major AI assistants and publishes his unfiltered firsthand take on each profile — which ones are worth your time, which ones aren't, and which paid plans are actually worth the membership. Look for the "Owner's Take" section on every tool page.

What to look for in an AI tool

  • Free tier quality — many tools are genuinely useful for free; pay only when you hit real limits.
  • Model access — paid plans usually unlock stronger models. Check which model you're actually getting.
  • Renewal pricing — intro prices change. We show approximate pricing; always confirm on the vendor's site.
  • Data practices — free AI is often subsidized by data. Read the privacy policy if that matters to you.
  • Lock-in — annual plans are cheaper but harder to exit; monthly is safer while you're evaluating.
Affiliate disclosure: this site earns commissions on qualifying purchases made through its links, at no extra cost to you. The big AI assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) have no affiliate programs — their links go straight to the vendor. Prices shown are approximate and change often.
